Pulmozyme is a mucolytic, which is a medicine that helps break up mucus. The active ingredient in Pulmozyme is recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I (rhDNase), which is an enzyme that targets and breaks up the DNA that makes mucus thick and sticky. The rhDNase in Pulmozyme is made from genetically engineered Chinese hamster ovary cells.
Pulmozyme is prescribed to people age 6 and over with cystic fibrosis (CF) to thin the mucus that clogs their airways, which improves lung function and helps prevent respiratory infections. Pulmozyme is also being studied as a way to maintain sinus health in people with cystic fibrosis who have had sinus surgery.

Pulmozyme is inhaled using a machine called a nebulizer. It should not be diluted or mixed with any other medicines in the nebulizer. Pulmozyme is a long-term medication that is usually taken once a day but is sometimes taken twice a day.
Pulmozyme is supplied in individual plastic vials that are packaged in a foil pouch. The vials should be stored in the foil pouch in the refrigerator. Discard Pulmozyme if:
- The vial has been opened
- It appears cloudy or discolored
- It has been at room temperature for more than 24 hours
- It is past the expiration date
Some common side effects of Pulmozyme include:
- Changes in voice
- Sore throat
- Stuffy or runny nose
- Dizziness
- Eye irritation
- Rash
Serious side effects are rare, but have been reported. Notify your doctor immediately if you have:
- Increased trouble breathing
- Hives
- Swelling or tingling of the throat, lips, mouth, or face
- Chest pain or tightness
Before taking Pulmozyme, tell your doctor if you:
- Take other medications
- Are allergic to Pulmozyme or Chinese hamster products
- Are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
- Are breastfeeding
A 30-day supply of Pulmozyme costs about $2,000. If you do not have insurance, or your insurance does not cover Pulmozyme, you may be able to qualify for Genentech’s assistance program, Pulmozyme Access Solutions.
