Definition: Bronchiectasis is a type of permanent damage to the large airways, causing the airways to become wide and less efficient at moving air. The most common cause of bronchiectasis is prolonged inflammation from repeated lung infections. Not everyone with cystic fibrosis will develop bronchiectasis, but about half of all people who have bronchiectasis also have cystic fibrosis.
