Inhaling Sugar as a Treatment for Cystic Fibrosis? Sweet!

From Lori Alma, About.com GuideJuly 28, 2008

We’ve heard all the bad things about sugar, but it seems the sweet substance that many of us love to hate and hate to love may have some redeeming qualities after all. A recent Australian study showed promising results when people with mild to moderate forms of CF inhaled mannitol, a sugar solution that is commonly used to treat increased intracranial pressure and certain urologic conditions. Mannitol, which is much different from common table sugar, is known to have properties that encourage sodium and chloride transport through cells.

In the Australian study, 39 participants showed improved respiratory function from inhaling mannitol. Researchers believe the mannitol helped draw body fluid into the airways, which diluted the secretions and made them easier for the patients to clear. The concept makes sense, and is similar to the benefits of hypertonic saline, another beneficial CF treatment brought to us courtesy of the Land Down Under.
